Our Approach · For understanding, not medical advice

Understanding a child's road to recovery.

Plain-language education for families and donors: what pediatric brain injury recovery involves, the therapies families seek access to, and what research is exploring. We're a charity — your child's care decisions belong with you and your child's care team.

The basics

What families are navigating

Every child and every injury is different. But most families tell us the same things helped them find their footing.

A brain injury is an event. Recovery is a season.

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) happens in a moment — a fall, a crash, an accident. What follows unfolds over months and years: therapy sessions, school adjustments, new routines. Families aren't dealing with a day; they're pacing themselves for a season.

Children's recoveries are still being understood.

Children's brains are still developing, and how they recover is an active area of study. That's why we say we help "advance understanding" — families' experiences, shared openly and with consent, help the whole community learn.

Consistency is hard — and it's mostly about money and logistics.

Families consistently tell us the hardest part isn't willingness — it's cost, distance, insurance paperwork, and time off work. Those are problems a charity can actually help with. That's our lane.

Hope and honesty can live in the same sentence.

No one can promise a specific outcome for any child — and no honest organization will. What we can do is remove barriers, walk with families, and celebrate every step a child takes.

What we help fund

Therapies families seek access to

Families and their care teams choose the recovery plan. Our role is narrower and simpler: when cost stands between a child and the sessions their family has chosen, we help fund access. The kinds of therapies families in our community commonly pursue include:

  • Rehabilitative therapiesPhysical, occupational, and speech therapy — often the backbone of a child's recovery plan.
  • Cognitive and developmental supportPrograms that support attention, memory, learning, and getting back to school life.
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)Some families, working with their doctors, pursue HBOT as part of their child's recovery journey. It is an area of active research (see below), and families' experiences with it are part of the story we help share.
  • Family and emotional supportCounseling and community — recovery is a family journey, and the family's wellbeing is part of the child's.

We don't recommend, provide, or sell any therapy, product, or provider. We fund access to what families and their care teams choose, evenhandedly.

What research is exploring

The science is being taken seriously

We're not a research organization, and we don't make claims about what any therapy can do. What we can tell you is that serious institutions are asking serious questions:

USF Health (Tampa, FL) is conducting a $28 million state-funded clinical trial of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for traumatic brain injury — one of the largest studies of its kind. The trial enrolls veterans with brain injuries; research specific to children is at an earlier stage.

We cite this as evidence that the questions families are asking are being studied rigorously — not as evidence of what any therapy does for any child. As findings are published, we'll share them here in plain language.

Our own contribution is humbler: with families' consent, we share their experiences and, over time, anonymized patterns from the children our community supports — so the next family, and the researchers, have more to work with.

Justus For Kids TBI Foundation Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charity, not a medical provider. Nothing on this website is medical advice, and nothing here should be read as a claim that any therapy cures, treats, or is proven for traumatic brain injury.

Every child's situation is unique. Please make all care decisions with your child's own doctors and care team. If you're not sure where to start, our Local Support page lists neutral resources — including official state programs.

Understanding is step one. Access is step two.

Our programs exist to close the gap between the plan a family has and the sessions they can afford.
